De FED heeft weer eens een hele meuk geld geprint om de Amerikaanse overheid te financieren. Behalve dat dit een achterbakse manier is om belasting te heffen heeft het manische printbeleid van de centrale bank ook de conjunctuurcyclus tot gevolg.

De Federal Reserve, de Amerikaanse centrale bank, is China voorbijgestreefd als de grootste eigenaar van Amerikaans staatspapier. Dat schrijft de Britse krant Financial Times (FT).

Marike Stellinga plaatst vraagtekens bij de huige maatregelen die uit de koker van Fed-baas Bernanke komen.

Tegelijkertijd is het beleid van Bernanke niet zonder gevaar. Wie de geldpers aanzet, loopt de kans op hoge inflatie, hoge geldontwaarding. Nu de Fed veel staatsschuld opkoopt, loopt ook de onafhankelijkheid van de centrale bank gevaar. Want als de Fed geld weer schaarser en duurder wil maken (en de rente verhoogt), dan lijdt het zelf grote verliezen op die staatsobligaties. Als de rente stijgt, dalen de koersen van staatsobligaties.
